Abstract
Since the invention of differential cryptanalysis in 1991 by Biham and Shamir, it has been the most powerful method to cryptanalyze block ciphers. Differential cryptanalysis has also been used with success to attack cryptographic hash functions. In 2004, X. Wang improved differential cryptanalysis of hash functions significantly and showed that it can be used to find collisions for SHA-1.
In this talk we explain how differential cryptanalysis can be applied to hash functions and what recent improvements have been made to the state of the art. We point out some of the remaining hurdles and present some challenges and future research directions.
